Suppose you receive a 5% increase in salary this year and a 15% increase next year. The average annual percentage increase is 9.886, not 10.0. Why? Begin by calculating the geometric mean; GM = 1.09886. Recall that to convert a decimal to a percentage, move the decimal over two places to the right. It directly follows that the increase is 9.886%.
