Mean
Mean: The average or arithmetic mean found by adding all the data values of the variable x or X and dividing by the number of these values, n or N.
The first measure of central tendency is the mean. The most familiar mean (i.e., average or arithmetic mean) is represented by x̄ (read "x-bar" or "sample mean"). To find the mean, add all the data values of the variable x (this sum of x is symbolized by Σx) and divide by the number of these values, n. Use the following formula to express a mean: `x̄ = (Σx)/n`.
For example, in a data set that consists of five values, 3, 4, 5, 6, 4, the arithmetic mean is 4.4.
`x̄ = (Σx)/n = (3+4+5+6+4)/5 = (22)/5 = 4.4`
